“In my mind, the story is a translation of a text found in the excavation of the historic city of Kandalore. It appears to be 1,500 - 2,500 years old and to be a first-person account by a young man called Chaemon, who saw and took part in some remarkable events which took place then. Chaemon, who was both a prince and a scholar, recalls this adventure which he had at the age of 15, and is both precise and honest about his own part in it. He presents a galaxy of different characters, and his story has many twists and turns. Such an account is an extremely rare survival from ancient times, and we have no way now of checking if any of the events described actually happened or even if Chaemon himself ever lived. But it is well worth reading even so.”
